How to Force Install Windows 10 Anniversary Update




You have read it everywhere but if you were left on the sidelines still wondering whether you already got the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the short and easy answer is if you haven't updated your Windows 10 which took at least two hours then you haven't got it yet. The Anniversary Update is a major one and unlike your regular Windows 10 updates, and the installation process is way much longer.

If you want to double check though your Windows 10 version, go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > View your update history. If the latest update of your Windows 10 is not build 1607 then you haven't installed the Anniversary Update yet. 

To force install the Anniversay Update, go to Settings >  Windows Update > click Learn More. You will be directed to the Windows Update website.

Then click the button Get the Anniversary Update now.

Microsoft says the update process takes around one and a half hours. Though others advice you must exercise patience when installing this update. If in case you encounter being stuck at a certain percentage after more than two hours then there must be a bug preventing the update from moving on. No need to wait much longer. Restart your computer and then troubleshoot what is causing the problem.

Before you start your update, it is very important that you first uninstall all your antivirus and antimalware softwares. Then turn off Windows Defender Real-time protection. To turn it off, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Defender then toggle off the button for Real-time protection.

I made the mistake of not uninstalling the above-mentioned softwares beforehand and my update got stuck at 91%. Just turning off the antivirus and antimalware would not work either. You have to uninstall them.

After you successfully installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you can uninstall the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant and click Uninstall/Change.
